Community Enrichment Fitness Network

The Community Enrichment Fitness Network (CEFN) is a non-profit organization in Philadelphia where their mission is to empower older adults to live healthier lifestyles through eating right and exercising. Their original website lacked usability, user flow, responsiveness, and consistent typography and branding. As their Webmaster for my first co-op, I took on the task to redesign the site to make it more user-friendly, engaging, and accessible.

Role

Webmaster Co-op (solo)

Time

Apr. 2025- Sept 2025 (6 months)

Tools

WordPress, Beaver Builder, Pods (Plugin), Figma

Problem

Issues with the websites were

  • Lacking in clear flow and contrast

  • Not responsive to tablet or mobile devices

  • Inconsistent typography, spacing, margin, and padding

    • Some fonts are too small especially for the older adults since they’re part our target audience

  • Navigation bar had too much going on and had unused pages

  • Navigation bar hover state makes the text unreadable

  • Had many duplicate pages, unnecessary pages, and many unused pages causing the total amount of pages to be over 100

  • Inconsistent testimonial format

  • No way of sorting or filtering the many internship testimonies by job positions besides ctrl+F (cmd+F) and searching.

  • Outdated links and dead YouTube links

  • Low quality images/old images and image files were not optimized

  • Missing alt text

Research

Target audience:

  • Older adults who are looking forward to attending/purchasing tickets for events

  • Potential sponsors, vendors, or partners who want to be a part of CEFN

  • Interns or volunteers who are interested in interning/volunteering

Data and Findings:

  • Most mentioned issues in feedback and testing

  • Spacing off/align

  • Navigation color issues (unreadable/hard to see/struggles)

  • Inconsistencies/Lack of responsiveness

  • Need of filtering in testimonial

Goals

  • Implement a stylesheet and consistent branding and typography. Consistency spacing in margins and padding

  • Reduce redundant or duplicate pages. More organized

  • More transparency of what pages we have in navigation bar and buttons throughout the pages/reduce duplicate pages

  • More organized testimonial pages with sorting feature for internship especially

  • Make the website responsive to smaller screen sizes.

Design Process

In collaboration with the Graphic Design co-op intern in my team, we created a branding guideline so CEFN can have more consistency with their branding throughout their website, graphics, and promotional marketing materials. Below are the typography and color palettes from the web-specific section of the guideline.

Results

  • Responsive for all three device sizes

  • Cleaner and more intuitive user interface with improved flow

Takeaways

Due to the additional tasks assigned outside of the website like co-op recruitment and managing co-op interviews and emailing our sponsors, there were more that I would like to add or revise and things that I wished that I could’ve done like a more proper UX research and user testing, but overall I am very proud of what I was able to make and improve for my first co-op’s website.
